ARTISTS / TRACKS / LINKS
ION - Evensong
http://www.thinkingmetal.co.uk
Ion is a new solo venture by the established UK musician, David J. Hughes. Most people will know David as the founder member of T-Bass and the last man standing in the SkinMechanix collaboration. Both of these ventures typify the Hughes approach to making music. In other words, foot-on-the-floor, pedal-to-the-metal, full-on electronic power tracks with only an occasional nod towards slower, more romantic moods and feelings. Ion cuts off at a tangent and is, according to Hughes, an attempt to get back to basics, to shift the emphasis away from keyboard chops and screaming solos and towards a more symphonic and, dare one perhaps suggest, a more mature and maybe even a more relaxed state of mind. David is, after all, getting on a bit these days and needs to take it easy. So how did Ion develop? The sleeve notes on Future Forever tell the story... "The Ion project came about more or less by accident during the long, hot summer of 2006. In the midst of testing our recently developed ZEIT Step Sequencer someone forgot to hit the Stop button on the hard disk recorder and, when the mistake was discovered, we found that we had accidentally recorded more than 20 minutes of random, sequenced noodling, which had no real structure and no real direction. However, rather than just delete the session, we decided to listen ... and came away with the feeling that the music had a raw and unprocessed feel, it was completely natural, unforced and unhurried, the sound of a musician happy to do nothing more than aimlessly wander down strange and previously unexplored pathways in search of nothing more than nothing in particular." The end result was the track The Silent Scream, which was editted down from 20 minutes of ambient indulgence to just 5 minutes of actual music. The chords and the lead lines came a few minutes later, composed on the fly and in one pass, with successful takes simply cut and pasted together to build up the layers. And, after just 40 minutes of work, the piece was finished and available for download on the Infection Music web pages. Comments Hughes... "We were stunned by the realisation that it was possible to write something that was just about halfway decent in such a short space of time, the music of Ion grew out of this new-found fascination for tightly controlled rhythmic patterns coupled with the joy of re-discoevering the lost art of improvised electronic music." Listen to the music of Ion and simply enjoy. Sequencer music doesn't get much better than this.
Ion will be appearing at the Dundee Live event in Dundee, Scotland on 11th October 2008. The bill currently looks something like this:
M.O.D. and L.O.B.O. [RANDY ROBOT] - Shelter

M.O.D. RANDY ROBOT
Producer and DJ - M.O.D. aka Master of Disaster used to play drums back in his High school days in the early 90-s for a few bands. When he started University 1997 he decided to quit drumming and started Dj-ing. Shortly he started organizing parties in small underground clubs in Belgrade (Magna House, Aquarius, Fest) and was invited regularly to DJ at private parties. M.O.D is a freestyle DJ spinning an eclectic mixture of music, but as his roots are in the drums his sets contain a good mix of fresh beats (from dub and hip hop, nu-jazz, electro, deep house, techno to break beat and drum & bass). Here is short introduction of his recent work: 2006. Produced his first tune "MY WAY" which made No 1 on Studio B radio chart called "DISKOMER". 2007. was a resident DJ in famous club "Akademija" and a journalist for "Sound and Music magazine" in Belgrade. He also started to collaborate with musicians he met on myspace like: Randy Robot, MotionLess, Volatil, MzGlass and he is currently working on remixes for Ugochill Productions, Unbalanced and Shizla. He is always into experimenting with new sounds and different styles! You can hear some more of his work at SHMUKZ profile.

BANCO DA GAIA - Last Train To Lhasa
http://www.myspace.com/bancodegaia
The latest CD 'FAREWELL FERENGISTAN' - RELEASED JUNE 12 2006(EUROPE), JULY 4 2006(N. AMERICA). Toby Marks the creative force behind Banco De Gaia is a free thinker. He is also one of the worlds leading exponents of globally inspired eclectic electronica. Mixing electronic and accoustic instruments and voices his work defies genre classification. He has worked with a variety of musicians ranging from legendary saxophonist Dick Parry who played on Pink Floyds Dark Side Of The Moon to Anglo-Egyptian singer Natacha Atlas and cutting edge dance producers such as Jack Dangers and Fluke. Banco De Gaia cut his teeth on the early 90s Ambient Dub compilations (a precursor of the recent chill out marketing phenomenon). In 1994 he released his first studio album MAYA on Planet Dog records. MAYA was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize on its release, followed in 1995 by the critically acclaimed LAST TRAIN TO LHASA. Both albums reached No1.. in the UK independent charts as well as the national album chart top 40. In the following decade Banco De Gaia released LIVE AT GLASTONBURY, BIG MEN CRY, THE MAGICAL SOUNDS OF BANCO DE GAIA, IGIZEH and YOU ARE HERE as well as the best of compilations 10 YEARS and 10 YEARS REMIXED. Few artists, even with major label support, have viable careers beyond that difficult second album. Banco De Gaia however has already released a total of nine albums over the last 12 years. His work has been included on numerous compilations, film soundtracks, and advertising campaigns. He has been remixed by the great and the good, Oliver Lieb, Rabbit in The Moon and The Dub Pistols to name just a few. May 2002 saw the start of the long awaited re-release of the classic Banco De Gaia albums MAYA, LAST TRAIN TO LHASA, LIVE AT GLASTONBURY and BIG MEN CRY. The catalogue had been held in a legal limbo for a number of years in which time the rights had fallen into the hands of the Disney Corporation in the US. In 1999 Toby Marks started Disco Gecko Recordings in the UK to release THE MAGICAL SOUNDS OF BANCO DE GAIA and in October 2001 he bought back the rights to his entire back catalogue from Michael Dog who originally signed him to Planet Dog in1993. In September 2002 he also released the first ever Banco De Gaia compilation 10 YEARS, which was a critical and commercial success, followed by 10 YEARS REMIXED in 2003 which featured reworkings of Banco de Gaia tunes by Asian Dub Foundation, Dreadzone and Transglobal Underground amongst others. YOU ARE HERE, his first new studio album in three years, was released in May 2004. Banco de Gaia has always been as much about performing live as recording albums and Toby Marks has never been happy to let the live show stagnate. Various permutations of humans and electronics have seen live shows ranging from him onstage alone with a laptop to as much as one tonne of hardware accompanied by 5 musicians, and in 2003 he decided it was time to explore the possibilites of working with video as well as music. In 2004 he took to the road with video artist Mik Findlay and together they explored issues including the environment, rights of indigineous peoples and globalisation to the delight of audiences worldwide. As a result the first Banco de Gaia video release, a DVD based on the 2004 live shows titled, not surprisingly, TWO THOUSAND AND 4, was released in June 2005 as a limited edition item only available through the Banco website and at live shows. Coming right up to date, June 2006 sees the release of Bancos latest studio album. Titled FAREWELL FERENGISTAN it will be released by Disco Gecko in Europe and by Six Degrees Records in North America and elsewhere.
LOVE MOTEL - Soft (GlitchBitch Re-flex Mix)
http://www.myspace.com/47133747
Three years after his critically acclaimed debut album Après le paradis, Geneva based composer Love Motel is back on the scene with Mind the Void. Invoking a full suite of portraits, Love Motel describes « his » 21st century through the eyes of a bunch of lost souls (wasted nerds, repentant machos, TV addicts, sadistic gigolos, former dictators and naughty astronauts) looking for salvation. And while the portraits that he paints aren’t that pretty, his sexy musical performance as well as his dark and ironic lyrics transform Mind the Void into an hypnotizing, beautiful and menacing soundtrack of now. Mind the Void offers the same rich intensity as Love Motel’s former album, but meted out through a more mature and more cohesive sound that immediately grabs your attention. Andres Garcia’s skilful production keeps the tension bubbling just below the surface mixing glam rock guitars, booty basses and robotic rhythms bringing back something from the 80s, although contemporary textures always lurk beneath the surface of Mind the Void.
GLITCHBITCH
http://www.myspace.com/glitchbitchmusic
Celebrating our first mini milestone in impeccable style, No Love Lost Records is very happy to welcome the ultra talented GLITCHBITCH into the mix for our fiftieth exclusive Mixtape Project session. This mix is an absolute monster, forty tracks in sixty minutes, a good proportion of said tunes having been tweaked and glitched by the lady herself. This is one of the freshest sounding mixes you will have heard in ages. Even by our heady and forward thinking standards, this mixtape might actually take a second or even third listen before its every intricate twist and turn unfolds. GLITCHBITCH has a way of making things feel truly futuristic, layering, distorting, breaking and blending sounds so quickly at times that you might think you're hearing music from the year 2050. It's also nice to hear a remix or two by hot as lava Warp Records signees FLYING LOTUS and RUSTIE, both of whom we are a bit in awe of here at No Love Lost Records (and would kill to have in the mix.) Don't forget to say a big hello toGLITCHBITCH via her MySpace page where you can also get your ears on some of her previous mixes.

BEE SHOCKED TECHNIQUE - Second Message
http://www.myspace.com/beestealers
"A collection of rogue sound constructs that have been ripped by stellar tidal forces created by the mini black holes collapsing in the sparse spaces between biological audio sensory apertures, the point of convergence moves with us, forever trapped in the vortices…….The manifestation: Outbursts of: Unpresidented barbaric rythms that conjure our Picts ancient gods that spring forth from the broken soil to fuel Anglo imperialist squarewave, and other waves as well, frequency time dilations and oscillatory sub midrange Napoleonic raucousnesses.

Making music for over 20 years accompanied by tea at first, then whisky. When we first started out on our musical journey we worked with the artist now known as Future Daze and a few other folks too. Many of the old Lethal Foam tracks are preserved only on cassette tapes as way back then there were no PCs like we have today. It would be great to get some of these tracks like Dark Green Number Eight or Spy Theme onto myspace, but recreating them could be difficult, but we may give it a go. We have never played live as any of our incarnations, but GKP did once front a punk band called The Runts. Their debut gig was unfortunately cut short when a fight broke out in the pub hosting this momentous occasion, as the locals werent keen on seeing a fake hunchback in white face paint screaming down a microphone. Some woman who objected got the mic right in the face courtesy of the guitarist, Graham. The Runts never played another gig. And they got barred from the pub. In later years however GKP did work with Rock the Dock, a band formed for a small charity concert in
HALO EFFECT - FRAGILE
http://www.myspace.com/bandhaloeffect
At the beginning of 90's, while the Grunge wave ruled everywhere, Alessandro Polinori and Federico Rosi gave birth to several musical projects wholy electronics named Puppets and Electro Alba, whose main musical reference was the great Depeche Mode. Years and years of concerts and demo-tapes led them to accumulate more and more experiences in the musical roman landscape and not only, until the bands split for inner reasons. Later on Alessandro Polinori resumed his musical activity in the electronic band Kaiser Soze (among other things winner in the Festival Feedback and protagonist in several DM Parties), while Federico Rosi had gone on with several other projects. When these band split, in the autumn 2001 the project HALO EFFECT born in Ostia Lido Rome, with the line up compound by Alessandro Polinori (synth&progr), Federico Rosi (synth&progr) and John Peverieri (vocals&lyrics), big fan of Depeche Mode and always present at dark and electronic roman clubs. The band's aim is to create an original electronic product even remaining clear the artstic references (first Depeche Mode and generally the german electronic music, synthpop, darkwave and EBM ). The lyrics are in english in the conviction that that language, together with german, is the best language that fits well with the electronic music, allowing at the same time to have an international product. The atmospheres go from synthpop to darkwave always marked by dark shades, even when the rates go faster. During their live performances HALO EFFECT play many Depeche Mode tracks, as a proper tribute to the band they literally adore. On this subject, the wonderful debut gig on april 17th 2003 is worth to be mentioned, when HALO EFFECT took part in the 1st Great Depeche Mode 013 Electric Zone Party before an audience of 600 persons in the historic roman club Black Out. The collabaration with the first italian site about Depeche Mode (www.depechemodeitalia.com) has allowed to Halo Effect to meet Marco Cattani who was involved, with his guitar, in the Black Out live show and now he is integral part of the band as guitarist and also synth&progr. The first demo "Past Continuous" was out in the August 2003 and it was good welcomed by the audience. From then on Halo Effect shared the stage with important bands of the international landscape as Melotron, The Cruxshadows, Greenhouse, De/Vision and Bloody Dead & Sexy, in DM Parties context, but above all in many events in which they showed original tracks. The live activity is gone on with many concerts in roman clubs and with fortunate concerts in Naples and in Igea Marina (Rimini). At the end of June Halo Effect have finished to record their second demo titled "Days Of Silence" that is possible to download from the site www.the-cure.it or directly in the audio section of the offcial band site www.haloeffect.too.it. At the moment Halo Effect are promoting their new work in their live shows together with, of course, some new Depeche Mode covers. Though the hard live activity that will lead them to open the concert of the italian historic band KRISMA, Halo Effect are now working on some new tracks that will take part in their first album.
MARK LANE - The Wealth Of Experience
http://www.editionsmarklane.com/
http://www.myspace.com/theantitech
Going back to the early dawn of the new wave and punk movements, Mark Lane began his electronic music and tape splicing experiments in 1980. His first release in 1981 was a vinyl 7” entitled “Love is So Aggravating.” Although it was well received, it was the release of his 1984 mini-LP entitled “Who’s Really Listening?” that garnered him critical acclaim and cemented his place historically as one of the early pioneers of gothic industrial minimal electronic synthpop. Tracks like “Sojourn” and “White Glove” still rank very high among djs and aficionados of this era and have become standards of the genre. During 1985 Mr. Lane made a short tour of the Netherlands with the founding members of the Klinik who were then touring their first record. Those shows and their recordings are still remembered as an innovative and important chapter in the history of the Belgian electronic music scene. Additionally Lane collaborated with a large number of European musicians of the era including Martin Bowes of Attrition, Andy Szava-Kovats of Data-Bank-A, Guy Van Miegan of Vomito Negro, Richard Van Dellen of De Fabriek, Peter Van Vliet of Mekanik Kommando, Conrad Schnitzler of Tangerine Dream and Kluster, and many more. In the mid 90’s Mark Lane released two CD-EPs “Black Lipstick” and “Shadow Merger” which in essence are sister recordings that link his past work to the present. Now at the height of his ardent analogue minimal wave style he celebrates his 25th music anniversary with three new releases, and continues to produce electronic music through a third decade.

ALBA BEAT - From Both Sides
Hello people and welcome to my page, here is some form of a Biography to let you know some history about my musical self, im Gary Taylor, an Icelandic/English hybrid, based in Birmingham/Reykjavik, i started making music from an early age, inspired by the original music of the time, Punk, New Wave, Reggae, Electro Pop, Disco, Funk, playing drums on cardboard boxes and tins writing lyrics and singing with friends in my parents Garage (we thought we were a real Band), from there on i played on whatever Home keyboard, Piano, Organ i could lay my hands on, always dreaming of Synthesizers and Studios and being rich and famous (Not the case now i may add), over time i made music with my friends at home on simple old School Yamaha and Casio keyboards with added drums (you know the ones with a button for drum fills), we added taped recordings of cool phrases from Video Films of the day (yes it was the 80's and its called Sampling and Editing now), this was the start of my creative approach to music, i started DJ'ing around this period, Scratching, Mixing up Tapes and general madness on the Turntables which i still involve in my music from time to time, then came the 90's and i worked and played hard and bought myself my first Home Studio, i worked under the name of Solid Dawn and built up a good back catalogue of ideas and Demos all the time working harder on my DJ live set performances, this is where i really learnt what music was all about, people, gatherings, inspiration, new technology and attitudes and different approaches to making music, for me another perfect building block, then when the millennium came i started teaching myself more musical skill, production, engineering, everything about the musical process i could find out about, i also went back to college to learn more about music production, now i feel the time is right for people to hear my music and sounds, with the added confidence and mobility the Internet brings ive started my Alba Beat project up here on myspace, so there we have me in a nutshell people all up to date, im sorry this Biog didn't last that long or not, but i do hope you will enjoy what im doing here, keep in touch, Peace, Gary, Alba Beat.
